How to Make Your Bathroom Smell Good

Learn how to make your bathroom smell good all the time.  No one likes cleaning the bathroom, but these tips will help you keep it smelling fresh all the time.

Keeping a clean house is much more than sweeping, mopping and reducing clutter; a clean house has to smell nice, too.  One of the most difficult rooms in the house to clean is probably your bathroom.

And of course, it gets even harder to maintain cleanliness in the bathroom with little kids running around.  Moms of boys, you know what I'm talking about, right?

I'm really paranoid about my bathroom because we have in home therapists several times a week.  At our old house, I didn't let the kids use the guest bath downstairs.  Now we only have one bathroom, so I can't do that anymore.

How to Make Your Bathroom Smell Good

Learning how to make your bathroom smell good is much like learning how to make your home smell good.  Many of the tips are similar, but I've added a lot more tips and little hacks for keeping your bathroom cleaning and smelling great.

Quick and Effective Tips

In a pinch? Have company coming over unexpectedly? I will admit that I have turned away from guests and mouthed to a child. "Please check the bathroom" and pleaded with my eyes and crossed my fingers that they did a good job while I talked to the guest.

Use an Air Freshener

Although chemicals may have adverse effects over time, a spritz of air freshener can have quick positive effects without real potential of long-term damage.  I use this natural air freshener to keep odors to a minimum. Prefer to make your own?  Try this homemade disinfectant and deodorizing spray to kill germs and freshen the room with essential oils.

Check the Sink

If your sink smells, it may be due to a blockage in the sink. Using a drain cleaner to get rid of clogs can quickly eliminate the bad odor in your bathroom.

Open a Window

If you can, open a window to quickly clear the bad odor of the your bathroom.  If it's cold, even opening the window for a few minutes can really help make your bathroom smell good with fresh air.

Use Essential Oils

Not only can essential oils provide a variety of therapeutic benefits when added to the bathroom, but they can also freshen and purify the smell of a bathroom. Using chemical cleaners can have harmful effects over time as well, and don’t smell very nice either.

Best Essential Oils for the Bathroom

For the bathroom, look for essential oils that deodorize and smell good.  Citrus oils like grapefruit and lemon essential oil work best for the bath.  You can also use a cleaner with lemon or orange essential oils.

You can diffuse these oils with a diffuser or use a reed diffuer for a more lighter scent. When necessary, put a few drops into the toilet itself.  Simply adding a few drops of your preferred oil into the toilet can really improve the smell of the bathroom.

Clean the Nooks and Crannies of the Toilet

Many of the bad odors in the bathroom most likely stem from the toilet. Naturally, the toilet is much more likely to collect and trap the majority of the negative odors in the bathroom. To combat this, be sure to scrub the entire toilet periodically.

Additionally, wiping off the underside of the toilet seat every other day or so can really help to improve the smell of your bathroom. Additionally, keeping the toilet clean can make bathroom cleaning a lot easier.

Keep the Bathroom Sink Clean

Bacteria, soap residue, and other germs can build up on the surface of a sink and faucet over time. Therefore, it’s important to keep the sink cleaned and sanitized. Don't forget to get behind the faucet, too.  There's barely any room behind mine, so I wrap a cloth over a butter knife and use that to clean back there.

Cleaning the sink is simple: just use a preferred cleaning wipe and wipe off the sink surface and the faucet. I try to do this about every other day to keep the germs at bay. While this won’t make a major difference in the smell of your bathroom, it will prevent the smells before they build up.

If I had to get cleaning supplies out every other night, it wouldn't get done.  I keep these compostable cleaning wipes under the sink for a quick clean.

Use Natural Cleaning Techniques

There are several natural techniques you can use to cut through the odor of your bathroom.

Baking Soda

Placing a small bowl of baking soda in a discreet area of the bathroom can help to draw out and eliminate odors.  You can also use baking soda to clean your sink or toilet naturally. Read: Cleaning With Baking Soda

Lemons

Use lemons to mask the smell.  Placing a small bowl of sliced lemons near the toilet can help add a pleasant citrus smell and cut through the odor of the toilet.

Vodka and Water

Mix together 3 parts water for 1 parts vodka and add a few drops of your preferred essential oils for a terrific DIY air-freshener.  Use this to spray around your bathroom to naturally kill odors.

Vinegar

Vinegar is a great bathroom cleaner.  It can help reduce rust, too, if you have hard water.  Like baking soda, it also eliminates odors.  Set a bowl of vinegar in the bathroom overnight to get rid of odors. Read: How to Clean Hardwood Floors With Vinegar

Utilize the Air Vents in your Bathroom

Most bathrooms have air vents you can make great use of. There are many ways to use air vents to your advantage as well. Placing scent packets or a cotton ball with your favorite essential oil on it inside the vent can help improve the overall smell of your bathroom. You can also place air fresheners outside the vent and allow the vent to perforate the bathroom with your favorite smells.

Establish a Cleaning Routine

As mentioned before, it is important to stay on top of the bathroom cleaning. By establishing a cleaning routine, you can eliminate bacteria and germs before they turn into horrible odors.

Additionally, establishing a cleaning schedule routine can allow you to get the rest of the family involved in cleaning. Staying organized and consistent in your cleaning can really help you to stay on top of the bathroom odors.

General Cleaning Tips

Wash Your Shower Curtain Often

Over time, your shower curtain can collect dirt and grime. Washing your shower curtain often can prevent it from becoming smelly. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions to wash it.  I wash mine on the gentle cycle and hang it to dry.  If it's above freezing outside, I hang it outside on the line because the sunlight can also kill odors.

Toilet Brushes

Clean your toilet brush often  In order to keep your toilet clean, your toilet cleaning brush must be clean as well. Make sure to clean the brush often to keep your toilet in tip-top shape.

Clean Your Shower

Use a sponge or washcloth to clean your shower after every use.  I fill a dishwand with vinegar and dish soap and use that to clean quickly.

Mop Your Floors

Use cleaners and mop your bathroom floors often.  I typically just use vinegar and hot water to clean the bathroom floor.  The vinegar helps deodoraize the room. If you have little boys, you may want to use Lysol or something similar to clean your floors.

Enzyme Cleaner

Boy moms, do you want to know a secret?  Do you need to learn how to make your bathroom smell good when nothing else works? The secret is to use an enzyme cleaner! It works for pet stains, and it works for little boy stains, too.  I add a capful to the mop bucket with vinegar and water.

Keeping Yourself Clean

While it is important to keep your bathroom clean, it is also important to keep yourself clean. Muddy and filthy shoes can track dirt and grime into your bathroom, leaving behind odors. Additionally, old wet towels can smell musty over time, so it is important to dry your towels after use.

Don’t be Afraid to Buy Anti-Bathroom Smell Products

Purchasing and using smell packets and Poo-Pouri Spray  can really improve the overall fragrance of a bathroom.  You can also make your own DIY poo bathroom spray with essential oils.
