I played with some recipes both with and without instant coffee.  I'm not normally a fan of instant coffee, but for this recipe it is a lot easier.  I'll drive you directions to make it both ways, but be warned that making dalgona coffee without instant coffee takes more time and effort.

This is an easy recipe that takes about 5 minutes to whip up.  You can easily change the flavor by switching syrups.

You can also make it sugar free and dairy free or vegan very easily by switching the milk choices.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona coffee is the latest TikTok trend.  It's a coffee drink made by whipping instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until it gets creamy.  Then add the fluffy whipped coffee to cold or hot milk.  You can then top it with honey, cocoa, or crumbled biscuits.

Instant coffee will give you the best results.  You can't make it with brewed coffee, but you can use grounds and prepare them to make Dalgona coffee without instant coffee.

Coffee (Instant or Not)

I think instant coffee is bitter, so I don't drink it very often.  I did pick some up to make French vanilla dalgona coffee, and I'm sure I'll use it up for this yummy drink.

You can use regular coffee grounds, but it's more work.  You'll need to put a scoop of coffee beans into a coffee grinder.  Then grind for 30 seconds.  Check it and keep grinding 30 seconds at a time until it's a fine powder.

Then pour the coffee grinds through a sieve and retain only the fine powder that did not pass through.  You can use the larger grains to brew your regular coffee for the day.

Sweetener

You can use sugar, honey, coconut sugar, or monk fruit to sweeten your dalgona coffee recipe.  This has quite a bit of sugar in it, so feel free to swap it for monk fruit.

Milk Choice

I used whole milk to make my dalgona coffee because that's what we usually use.  You can use 2 percent milk or even swap it for almond milk if you want a dairy free or vegan dalgona coffee recipe.

Syrup

I added French vanilla syrup for some extra flavor.  I used Sebastiano's syrup.  You can swap it for hazelnut or any other flavor if you want.

Some brands have sugar free syrups.  Those would also work well.

Or omit the syrup and leave it plain.  It's plenty sweet enough without the extra syrup.

French Vanilla Dalgona Coffee Directions

Step #1

Whisk together the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water.  You can use a whisk and mix by hand or use a stand mixer or hand mixer.

Mix until it is shiny and smooth.  It should hold its shape and become like a foam.

Step #2

Fill two glasses with ice cubes.  Add 1-2 tablespoons French vanilla syrup to each glass.

Step #3

Fill each glass almost to the top with milk.

Step #4

Place whipped coffee on top of the milk mixture.  Enjoy!

The foamy coffee on top will eventually melt into the milk, so take your Instagram photos as soon as you make it.

Dalgona Coffee Variations

This simple drink is delicious on its own, but you can make some variations for a brand new drink.

Try swapping the instant coffee for matcha powder.  You'll have a green froth on top that maybe isn't the prettiest, but it will be full of antioxidants.

Add some cocoa powder to the instant coffee mixture for a mocha Dalgona coffee recipe.

If you want a creamy chocolate drink, omit the coffee and just use cocoa powder.  You can try mixing it with milk to make it creamier.

Try adding cinnamon or ginger to the coffee foam or dusting the top with one of these spices.

Replace the instant coffee with a chai tea mix for a Dalgona chai tea.
