How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice From Scratch

Learn how to make pumpkin pie spice from scratch.  Use this in all of your fall and winter recipes, including coffee and desserts.

The months between summer and Halloween are best known as pumpkin spice season in my house. During this time I switch to a pumpkin spice coffee creamer, and my family makes all sorts of pumpkin recipes.

As such, I go through a lot of pumpkin spice each year, especially as I enjoy baking from scratch. I also make my own homemade coffee creamer with pumpkin spice.

Because I go through so much, I like to make my own pumpkin spice from scratch. There are several reasons to make your own pumpkin spice.

Perhaps you’re in the middle of a recipe and you’ve run out, or you just want to save some money.

Following is an easy pumpkin pie  recipe you can make from scratch that is sure to make the season.

How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice From Scratch

What is Pumpkin Spice Made Of?

There are several spices that you will need to make pumpkin spice, including:

Additionally, there are a few optional spices you can add at your own discretion, including black pepper and cardamom. These spices can add a little bit of extra flavor, or even some heat for different recipes.

Can Allspice Be Used Instead of Pumpkin Spice?

While allspice can be a very useful and versatile spice, it is not a substitute for pumpkin pie spice. Rather, it is a central ingredient and cannot be replaced.

Thankfully, pumpkin pie spice is so easy to make, you won’t need to worry about substitutions.

What is the Difference Between Apple Pie Spice and Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Apple pie spice and pumpkin pie spice are very similar.  Both have cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice.  Apple pie spice usually has cardamom, too.

The key difference is that pumpkin pie spice has cloves, and apple pie spice does not.

Where to Buy Spices

I live in Amish country, so I get most of my spices from an Amish bulk food store.  There is a big difference between bulk spices and what you get from the store.

If you can't buy bulk spices locally, I recommend getting them on Etsy or iHerb.  If you get them from a grocery store, I recommend buying organic and high quality spices.

Those 99 cent jars will work, but you'll get more flavor from higher priced spices.

Recipes Using Pumpkin Pie Spice

I use pumpkin pie spice for several different recipes, including in my coffee creamer, desserts, and even in soaps!

Here are some pumpkin recipes that you can use this spice blend in:

Storing Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

Your pumpkin pie spice will last about 6 months.  I usually make one batch at a time because I don't want to waste spices.

You can store it in the fridge up to a year.

Spices are dry and don't really go bad, but they will lose their potency.

Since I buy spices in bulk, I bought spice storage jars.  I really like the bigger size of these.  I can store a little more than a store bought jar of spices in each jar.
