What is an OMCheese Burger?

Applebee’s OMCheese is a cheesy burger featuring a hamburger patty topped with cheese, bacon, and lettuce, then served with a rich, creamy cheese sauce.

It's one of their newer burgers, and it's still available as of this writing.  With food prices these days, we aren't eating out much.  So I did some research to find out how to make it at home after I tried one in the restaurant.

Why You’ll Love This Applebee’s OMCheese Copycat Recipe

  • Easy to make: You only need a handful of simple ingredients.
  • One-skillet cheese sauce: The sauce is prepared right in the skillet used for the burger.
  • Rich and cheesy: Heavy cream and shredded cheddar create a decadent sauce.
  • Restaurant flavor: Garlic, bacon, cheese, and a juicy burger make a delicious combination.
  • Perfect for burger night: Serve it with fries, potato wedges, or your favorite side dish.

Applebee’s OMCheese Copycat Ingredients

For this homemade OMCheese burger, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Hamburger patty
  • 1 slice cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Bacon
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • Hamburger buns

Choosing the Cheese

Shredded cheddar cheese works especially well for the creamy skillet cheese sauce. You can use mild or sharp cheddar depending on your preference.

For the cheese slice on the burger, use your favorite burger cheese. American, cheddar, or another good melting cheese will work well.

How to Make Applebee’s OMCheese Copycat

1. Grill the Hamburger

Heat a cast iron skillet and grill the hamburger patty until cooked to your desired doneness.

Once the burger is cooked, remove it from the skillet and set it aside.

2. Make the Garlic Cheese Sauce

Add the minced garlic to the same cast iron skillet. The leftover flavor from cooking the burger helps add even more savory flavor to the sauce.

Pour the heavy whipping cream into the skillet and bring it to a boil.

Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and continue stirring until the cheese melts into the cream.

3. Remove From the Heat

Once the cheese has melted and the sauce is creamy, remove the skillet from the stovetop.

4. Build the Burger

Place the hamburger patty on a hamburger bun. Add the slice of cheese, lettuce, and bacon.

Put the top bun on the burger.

5. Add the Cheesy Finish

Slice the burger in half.

Place the two burger halves directly into the skillet with the creamy cheese sauce. This gives the burger plenty of cheesy, garlicky flavor and makes the presentation extra fun.

Tips for Making This Copycat OMCheese Burger

  • Use a cast iron skillet. Cooking the burger in cast iron gives it great flavor and also leaves delicious browned bits in the pan for the cheese sauce.
  • Have your burger toppings ready. The cheese sauce comes together quickly, so prepare your lettuce, bacon, cheese, and buns before you start.
  • Shred your own cheddar. Freshly shredded cheese melts smoothly and makes a deliciously creamy sauce.  I use a hand crank cheese grater and love it.
  • Don't walk away from the sauce. Once the heavy cream is added, keep an eye on it and stir as you add the cheese.
  • Serve immediately. This burger is best enjoyed while the cheese sauce is hot and creamy.
