How to Make a Flower Pot Gnome

How to make a flower pot gnome. Use Dollar Tree flower pot ideas to make an adorable gnome for your covered patio or for indoor use.  You can also make a garden gnome flower pot if you use a different beard for your gnome.

Flower Pot Gnomes

My kids are obsessed with gnomes.  My daughter has a fairy garden in the flower beds beside the patio, and the boys have some garden gnome statues.

I decided to make a garden gnome with flower pot for an indoor decoration.  Since I'm using mine indoors, I used a fabric beard.

This could also work on a covered porch.  I don't have a covered porch, so anything outside is subject to the weather.

But don't worry; you can use a more weather proof beard to set clay pot garden gnomes in your garden or on your patio or deck.

What is the Story of the Gnome?

Gnomes have been a symbol of good luck in Europe as far back as the 1600s.  Gnomes are mythical creatures from German folklore.  They are depicted as old men who guard treasures.

Gnomes are thought to provide protection for your home since they were said to guard treasures and valuable minerals in the earth.

Today, they are said to bring good luck because they watch over crops and animals on farms.

Why Are Gnomes so Popular Right Now?

Gnomes have been mass produced since the 1800s.  They were very popular then, but they faded in popularity for a while.

They are back now in part because the woodland and mythical trends are back.  In addition to fairies and woodland creatures, people now decorate with gnomes.

Gnomes are traditionally used outdoors to as a symbol of protection.  As such, gnomes are usually placed in gardens or on patios.

However, flower pot gnomes are a great way to decorate with gnomes inside the home.  Gnomes are often used as shelf sitters, signs, and other indoor decorations.

Garden Gnome Flower Pot Variations

I made this for Dollar Tree flower pot ideas with a flower pot from the dollar store.  My flower pot gnomes are for indoor use, but here are some variations, including clay pot gnomes to use outdoors.

  • Although the clay pot is mostly covered, you can also paint it.  I suggest a darker color to contrast with the beard or paint the pot white and use a gray beard.
  • I used a piece of faux fur fabric for the beard.  I used white, but you can use gray or gray and white.
  • Make your clay pot gnomes fun by using colored faux fur.
  • Save time and buy a precut gnome beard.  The Ohmmm Gnome has a large selection of colors and sizes.
  • If you want to use your garden gnome flower pot outside, use a waterproof fabric for the beard.  At Dollar Tree, I suggest using a mop head.
  • I used a wooden bead for the nose on my clay pot gnomes.  However, you can also use a ping pong ball from Dollar Tree or even a cork.  You can also use a felt gnome nose or a wood ball for a nose.
  • You can also add some gnome feet to peek out from the beard on your gnome flower pot craft.
  • I used twine from Dollar Tree to wrap my flower pot.  Add a pop of color by using colored jute instead.
  • I placed a large fake flower in my gnome flower pot.  You can add dirt and plant real flowers.  Fake succulents would also be really cute.
  • If you want to plant real plants in your clay pot garden gnomes, look for plants that don't get very large.  Some ideas are aloe vera, African violets, painted-leaf begonia, peperomia, and moth orchid.
