How to Make a Basket With Clothespins for Adults (or Kids!)

We don't buy much food in cans because I prefer to can my own food in jars or use frozen food, but I had some larger cans sitting here waiting to go to recycling.

I kept walking past the recycling bin, thinking the can was the perfect size for hold my coffee pods.  I wanted to turn it into an upcycled basket, so I started brainstorming for DIY basket ideas.

I was originally going to wrap something around it, but I was at Dollar Tree and saw the clothespins.  Aha!  I could make a basket with clothespins easy peasy!

This is a great to to learn how to upcycle tin cans and make clothespin crafts for adults (or kids).  I went pretty simple for my basket, but you can make DIY decorative baskets by painting or staining your clothespins.

What Kind of Crafts Can You Make Out of Clothespins?

I use Dollar Tree clothespins as clothespins to hold my clothes on the line.  I also use them for easy clothespin crafts for adults like this DIY dollar store organization basket.

Here are some more wooden clothespins crafts to try with your leftover pins:

Clothespin crafts for adults are so inexpensive to make because you get 30 pins for $1.25 at Dollar Tree!  Since you can paint them or otherwise decorate them, you can really make them unique.

You can use different sized cans or even use a small wood crate to make cheap DIY home organization hacks.  This is so simple to make, and you can use it all over your home.

How Do You Decorate Wooden Clothes Pins?

I didn't decorate the pins for my wooden clothespin crafts, but you totally can.  I wanted a more rustic look, and I may move this upcycled basket around to different areas in my home.

Here are some ways to decorate the pegs for easy clothespin crafts:

  • Use acrylic paint or chalk paint to paint the clothespins.  You can paint them all the same color or create a pattern.
  • Use stain or even coffee or tea to stain the clothespins for a rustic look.
  • Use washi tape to decorate the front of the clothespins.
  • Cut scrapbook paper and use Mod Podge to glue to the clothespins.
  • Decorate the clothespins with jewels or other small items.

Upcycled Basket With Clothespins Supplies

You will need the following to make Dollar Tree storage ideas for kitchen:

  • Wooden clothespins - I used 17 to wrap around the can I used.  You might need more or less, depending on the size of the can.
  • Metal can - I used one from canned chicken.  Wash well and remove the label and glue.
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

How to Make DIY Dollar Tree Organization Basket

Step #1

Take apart all of the clothespins that you'll need.  You can slide the wooden pieces from the spring in the middle to remove the wood parts.

Step #2

Add a line of hot glue to the flat size of the clothespins.  Then stick to the metal can.

Step #3

Repeat with remaining wooden pieces until the can is covered.

You can then use your upcycled basket as it or add a bow or sign to the front. I like these chalkboard signs from Dollar Tree to easy label things.

I used mine for storing my coffee pods, but you can use this for cheap DIY home organization hacks all over your home.  Make a few for the bathroom for hair accessories or cotton balls.  Use it to hold remotes beside your bed.

I hope you enjoyed these easy clothespin crafts for adults!
