Bird's Nest Fake Terrarium (Dollar Tree Spring Craft Ideas)

Learn how to make a fake terrarium with Dollar Tree supplies.  This miniature bird terrarium is perfect for spring and summer.  You can also customize this terrarium craft for different seasons or to match your decor.

How to Make a Bird's Next Faux Terrarium

Now that the weather is finally getting warmer, I'm ready for spring.  I'm ready for the flowers to pop up, the trees to bud, and the birds to chirp outside.

I don't decorate specifically for spring, but I do like to add some Dollar Tree spring decor that can also be used for summer.

I headed to Dollar Tree to see what was new for crafting and found lots of Dollar Tree spring DIY ideas.  I love the hanging globe terrarium, but I don't have anywhere to hang it.

Instead, I made a fake terrarium DIY to set on the table.  Now cross your fingers that my cats leave it alone!

How Do You Make a Fake Terrarium?

Making a faux terrarium is fairly easy.  You will need:

  • A clear container to put your terrarium in.  I used the hanging globe terrariums from Dollar Tree, but you can use a mason jar or other clear jar.
  • Then add some greenery like moss, succulents, or floral mats.
  • You can use just greenery for the bottom or add some rocks or pebbles.  Dollar Tree has bags of pebbles that would be cute in this Dollar Tree spring DIY.
  • Then add some decorations.  I used a bird nest, but you can use flowers or succulents or even use fairy garden figurines for a little scene.

How Do You Make a Fake Terrarium?

Making a faux terrarium DIY is similar to making a real terrarium.  The difference is that you don't need to use dirt and you can use fake plants and grass.

I made a Dollar Tree terrarium craft, so I used fake moss from Dollar Tree.  They also have sheets of faux greenery with the gardening supplies.

How Do You make a Dollar Tree Terrarium?

You'll find supplies to make a terrarium craft at most craft stores.  I decorate on a budget, so I looked for Dollar Tree spring decor to make mine.

They have a plastic hanging globe terrarium that's perfect for terrarium craft ideas.  They also have greenery and other decorations to use.

Can You Make a Terrarium With Fake Plants?

As much as I love real terrariums, I do not want the responsibility of taking care of it.  Instead, I use fake plants for a faux terrarium.

Dollar Tree has some cute fake plants to use.  You can also find fake plants on Etsy or Amazon.

How Do You Make a Faux Succulent Terrarium?

To make a faux succulent terrarium, simply use plastic succulents.  You will not need dirt, and your terrarium won't need any maintenance.

I like the Dollar Tree succulents, but you can find them at other craft stores or on Etsy.  I used them to make this DIY succulent diffuser.

Miniature Bird Terrarium Supplies

You will need the following to make a fake terrarium:

  • Chalk paint - I used Waverly white chalk paint for my spring terrarium.  You can use another color if you wish.
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Flower pot - I used a 5.25 inch tall terra cotta flower pot from Dollar Tree.
  • Jute twine - I got mine at Dollar Tree, but you can also find it on Etsy.
  • Plastic terrarium - Mine is from Dollar Tree.  You can also find it on Etsy.
  • Moss - I got it at Dollar Tree.  Etsy also has moss.
  • E6000 - I got mine from Amazon.
  • Bird's Nest - I've seen these at Dollar Tree but not lately.  You can find one at Etsy.
  • Glass knob - These are hard to find at Dollar Tree.  Try craft stores or Etsy.

How to Make a Dollar Tree Terrarium Craft

Step #1

Paint the terra cotta flower pot.  Let dry and add another coat if desired.

Step #2

Turn the flower pot upside down.  Use hot glue to attach the jute twine to the bottom and start wrapping it around.  Wrap as high as you like.  Cut the twine and use hot glue to secure in place.

Step #3

Then add E6000 to the flat part of the flower pot.  Then add some circles of hot glue.  Attach the globe to the flower pot.

Hot glue isn't strong enough to hold the globe in place, so I used E6000 for the strong bond and hot glue to hold it in place until the E6000 dries.

Step #4

Remove the screw from the knob.  Then use hot glue to attach it to the top of the globe.  Hot glue the bottom of the knob to hold it securely.

Step #5

Add a thin layer of moss inside the spring terrarium.  Add the bird's nest and place more moss around it.  You can use hot glue to attach the moss if you wish.  I also glued some moss to the front of the flower pot so the moss looks like it's growing from the globe down the flower pot.

Now you're done.  You can add a small bird or eggs to the bird's nest.  I set my Dollar Tree terrarium craft on the table and added some flowers and a small bird outside.

I hope this fake terrarium inspires you!  Have fun with it!
