Easy Mulled Cider Recipe Slow Cooker

How to make an easy mulled cider recipe slow cooker.  This is a great recipe for a crowd, and it can be served from the slow cooker for an easy drink that everyone can enjoy.

Last year, I made mulling spices and mulled wine, but I didn't get to the mulled apple cider recipe.  The wine was amazing and made the house smell so good.

We don't drink often, so I'm more likely to make this easy mulled cider recipe slow cooker for a gathering.  This way the kids and the non drinkers can have a delicious drink.

I like making drinks in a slow cooker because it's hands off after you mix everything together.  You don't need to watch the temperature like on the stove because there's no risk of it burning.

You will need to strain this mulled cider, but that's all that you'll have to do to get it ready to serve.  After you strain out the spices, you can put the hot mulled cider right back in the slow cooker for serving.

You can either make this mulled cider recipe with mulling spices or from scratch.

Then you'll have the spices mixed and ready to make this easy mulled cider in a slow cooker or to make a simple mulled wine recipe in a slow cooker.

Choosing Apple Cider

If you're making this for a party, it's worth getting the good apple cider.  I'm a little spoiled because I get it from the Amish.  It's so fresh, it barely has time to chill before I buy it.

Buying a good apple cider will make all of the difference for this recipe.  You want to use apple cider and not apple juice.  Apple juice won't give you the right flavor or texture.

Look for apple cider that's dark and cloudy.  This will have the best flavor.  It should be in the refrigerated section of the grocery store.

My store keeps it in a cooler near the apples in the produce section.

Local and unpasteurized apple cider will give the best flavor.  Don't worry about it being unpasteurized because you'll be cooking it in the slow cooker for a while.

Mulling Spices

I have an entire post on how to make mulling spices, so I won't get into all of it again here.

I recommend making your own spice mix or buying one.  Otherwise, you'll need the following:

I used dried orange peel in my mulling spices.  However, for this easy mulled cider recipe slow cooker, I'll also add some sliced fresh oranges for looks.

After I strain out the spices, I will keep the orange slices floating in the hot mulled cider to make it look pretty.

If you don't want to make your own mulling spices, you can get them in bulk on Etsy.

Straining the Spices

I don't know about you, but I don't want to strain a gallon of hot apple cider just before my guests arrive.

I use a spice ball to infuse the spices in the apple cider.  You can also place the spices in cheesecloth and tie it.

As I mentioned above, I do let the orange slices float on their own.  I don't remove them before serving, but you certainly can.

Just make sure that there are no orange seeds in the drink, especially if little ones are drinking it.

Mulled Cider Recipe With Alcohol

I don't add alcohol when I make this because I want it safe for kids and those who choose not to drink.  I have, however, put some alcohol on the counter for people to add their own.

A darker alcohol goes best with this easy mulled cider recipe.  Bourbon, brandy, or a dark rum work best.  Guests can add their own to their cup if they want it.

You can also add 1 to 1 1/2 cups of bourbon, brandy, or a dark rum to the entire slow cooker.   Just make sure that it's kept away from children!

The alcohol won't cook off at a low temperature, so it will still be potent when you drink it.

Try this hot spiked apple cider recipe for the right ratio of ingredients.

Stove Top Directions

If you'd rather not make this in a slow cooker, you can make it on the stove.  I recommend using a Dutch oven, but you can use a large pot.

Bring it to a boil and turn down the heat.  Let simmer for 2-3 hours before straining.

Storing Leftovers

This makes a lot of mulled apple cider, but you can store leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days.  Drink it warm or cold, but I think warm tastes better.
