Dollar Tree DIY Christmas Tree Cones

Looking for cone Christmas tree ideas?  Learn how to make DIY tree cones and get Dollar Tree Christmas DIY ideas to decorate your home for less.  This is an easy craft, but you can customize your trees and use different materials to make yours.

DIY Tree Cones

Dollar Tree is my favorite place to shop for craft supplies.  While their craft aisle has gotten better lately, the real finds are hidden all around the store.

This year, I wanted to do something different with my mantel.  I really like the cone trees that are so popular, but I have a big mantle to cover.

I didn't want to drop a lot of money to decorate one area, so I went to Dollar Tree to see what I could come up with.

I ended up finding styrofoam cones with the craft supplies, but then what could I use to cover them?  I found some white rope that was perfect for a simple and clean look that I was going for.

Supplies for DIY Christmas Tree Cones

You will need the following supplies to make DIY tree cones.  I'll also include where to find the supplies since Dollar Tree inventory varies by location.

White Polyester Rope - I found the twisted poly rope at Dollar Tree in the home improvement section.  You can also use their clothesline or even a mop head for a softer fabric.  If you can't find it in stores, you can find polyester rope on Amazon, and there are some listings with colored ropes.

Styrofoam Cones - I bought my styrofoam cones from Dollar Tree in the floral section by crafts.  If you can't find them in the store, you can buy them in quantities of 4 from their website.  They measure 3 inches wide at the bottom and 7 inches tall. You can also find foam cones on Amazon in various sizes.

Wooden Stem Pieces - I found wooden stem pieces at Dollar Tree with the floral supplies. I used them for the tree trunk.  They are optional.  You can also find wood stems on Etsy.

Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

How Do You Make Christmas Tree Cones?

Step #1

Add hot glue around the bottom of the cone.  Place the polyester rope on the bottom of the cone on the glue and wrap around the cone.

Step #2

Continue wrapping until you reach the top.  I used a dab of glue every few rows to keep the rope in place.  Once the entire cone is wrapped, use the scissors to cut the excess rope.

Step #3

Use hot glue to attach the wood piece to the bottom of the DIY tree cones.  Hold in place until the glue is set up.

Then you can display your cone Christmas tree craft as a centerpiece or on the mantle or where ever you'd like.

Christmas Cone Trees Variations

These are basic Dollar Tree Christmas crafts, but you can make them more elaborate if you want to.  Here are some ideas to dress them up.

  • Wrap the cones with jute twine for brown trees.
  • Use green polyester rope for a green tree.
  • Decorate your tree with small wooden or plastic circles or stars.
  • Cut pieces of fabric into long strips about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.  Wrap the trees with the strips of fabric.
  • Add a string of beads around the tree for a decoration.
  • Use fairy lights for lighted Christmas cone trees.
  • Use feathers or cut pieces of felt to decorate the trees.
  • Use a Dollar Tree duster or microfiber duster cut into strips for a fluffy tree.
  • Dollar Tree usually has red, gold, or green small ornaments to decorate the trees.
  • Check the craft section or Christmas section for small beads, gems, and other things to decorate the trees.
  • The Christmas village section usually has deer or other small animals to use to decorate around the trees.

I hope you got some good cone Christmas tree ideas to make your own!
