How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs With Marshmallows + Variations

Learn how to make hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows (or without!).  These little treats are fun to make and fun to use, and they make a cute gift for friends.  You can make them traditionally or with other flavor variations depending on your tastes.

If you're on TikTok or Instagram, then you've no doubt seen a hot chocolate bomb.  It's a hollow sphere of chocolate filled with hot cocoa mix and sometimes marshmallows or other goodies to make a fun drink.

They are inspired by bath bombs, but instead you drop them in hot water or milk to create a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

If you're having a holiday party, set several of these on a try and let your guests choose their favorite flavor to make their hot cocoa.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs With Marshmallows

Choosing the Best Chocolate

You can use Hershey's chocolate or chocolate chips to make hot chocolate bombs, but I don't recommend it.  It tends to be soft and not melt well.

If you do use chocolate chips, you can add 2 teaspoons of coconut oil per cup of chocolate chips.  This helps harden the chocolate and give it a nice gloss.

Unrefined coconut oil won't affect the flavor of your hot chocolate bombs, but you can use refined coconut oil if you prefer.

Instead, I recommend getting chocolate wafers.  You can get milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate.

These are made for melting and pouring, so they are really best to make hot chocolate bombs.

Just a note that you can not use food coloring to color chocolate.  It will cause your chocolate to get gritty and nasty.

If you want to use different colors, start with colored white chocolate wafers.

How to Melt Chocolate

You can melt chocolate in a double boiler, microwave, or in a chocolate melter.  I'll give you directions for all three methods, but be warned that I never have luck using the microwave.

You can also use your Instant Pot as a double boiler to melt chocolate.

How to Melt Chocolate in a Microwave

Chocolate has a tendency to burn in the microwave, so I don't use this method.  You'll place the chocolate in a glass bowl and microwave at 20 to 30 second bursts on high.

Stir between each interval and repeat until it's melted.  Some chocolate will melt as you stir, so really try to get it to melt before using another interval to avoid burning.

How to Melt Chocolate in a Double Boiler

This is how I used to make it.  Fill the bottom of a double boiler with water and heat over low heat.  Place chocolate in the top of the double boiler and let it melt.

Do not cover it because the lid can collect condensation, which can drip down into the chocolate.   Stir often until the chocolate is melted.

How to Melt Chocolate in a Wilton Melting Pot

I bought a Wilton Chocolate melting pot a few years ago, so that's what I use.  It's so easy: just put the chocolate in and turn it on.

You'll need to stir every few minutes to get it to melt evenly.

It has a silicone insert, so clean up is a breeze.  The chocolate just pops out for storage, and the silicone is very easy to clean.

I also have a sectioned silicone insert for it, so I can melt two different kinds of chocolate at the same time.  You can melt milk chocolate on one side and white chocolate on the other.

Then make both kinds of hot chocolate balls and drizzle the other kind of melted chocolate on top for a pretty look.

Hot Chocolate Mix

You can use your favorite hot chocolate mix recipe in your homemade hot chocolate bombs.  I like this sugar free hot chocolate mix recipe.

For a store bought mix, you can't go wrong with the classic Swiss Miss milk chocolate mix.  For a fun twist, try a white hot chocolate mix.

Chocolate Mold

You'll need a half sphere chocolate mold to make your hot chocolate bath bombs.  I used this one that makes a 2.5 inch sphere.

To make something similar without a mold, try my hot cocoa spoons recipe.

Hot Chocolate Bomb Ideas

You can really get create with this hot chocolate bomb recipe!  This is a basic recipe, and don't be afraid to add some other flavors.

  • Fill with either hot chocolate or white hot chocolate mix.
  • Drizzle colored or white chocolate on top of the bombs.
  • Use sprinkles, crushed candies, or crushed cookies to decorate the top.  They will stick to melted drizzled chocolate.
  • Use crushed peppermint candy canes instead of marshmallows for white or milk chocolate.
  • Add chopped Andes mints instead of marshmallows.
  • Use cappuccino mix instead of hot chocolate.
  • Use a pack of instant apple cider and drizzle with caramel.
  • Use milk chocolate and marshmallows and then add crushed graham crackers on top for a smores hot chocolate bomb.

Hot Chocolate Bombs Ingredients

Makes 6 hot chocolate bombs

  • 2 cups chocolate chips or chocolate wafers (about 12 ounces)
  • 1 cup hot chocolate mix
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows

Directions

Step #1

Melt the chocolate chips or chocolate wafers in a double boiler or in a chocolate melting pot.

Step #2

Use a silicone brush to brush the melted chocolate onto the sides and bottom of the mold cavity.  It should be fairly thin, but it should cover all of the mold.  Place in the freezer for five to ten minutes.

Step #3

Place a flat pan on the stove and heat to low.  Carefully remove a half sphere and set it on the warm pan.  This will melt the bottom and make it smooth.  Be quick so the entire thing doesn't melt.

Step #4

Fill one half sphere with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows.  You can mound the marshmallows up if needed.

Step #5

Warm the other half of the sphere to melt the chocolate.  Press gently on the half that you just filled.  Hold gently but firmly for 15 to 20 seconds.  Place in the freezer for 5 minutes to set up.

If the halves don't stick together, dip a spoon into melted chocolate and smooth it over the center of the sphere.

When you're ready to use your hot chocolate bomb, place it in a mug and pour hot milk or water over it.  It will melt, and the marshmallows will burst out.
