How to Make Salted Caramel Apple Cider Bombs Recipe

How to make apple cider bombs.  These are like hot chocolate bombs, but they are salted caramel apple cider bombs that make a delicious cup of hot apple cider.  They have a caramel outer shell and powdered apple cider inside.

How to Make Hot Apple Cider Bombs

In the last two years, two things have been really popular on my blog: hot cocoa bombs and apple cider.  So this year, I decided to combine them to make an apple cider bombs recipe.

My kids love hot cocoa bombs, and they also loved these apple cider bombs.  They make great apple cider gifts too.

When I decided to make these, I was a little stumped on the outer shell.  I like chocolate dipped apples, but I didn't want to drink chocolate apple cider.

Then I found salted caramel wafers, and I knew they would be perfect for apple cider bombs DIY at home.

What are Apple Cider Bombs?

Hot apple cider bombs are just like a hot cocoa bomb.  They have a hard outer shell, but they are hollow inside.

Inside, there's powdered apple cider.   You place the caramel apple cider bombs in a mug and add water water, and the caramel outer coating melts.  Then stir, and you have a delicious mug of hot apple cider.

How to Melt Salted Caramel Wafers

There are three ways that you can melt the salted caramel wafers to make a caramel apple cider bombs recipe.  You can melt it in the microwave, in a double boiler, or using a Wilton melting pot.

How to Melt Caramel Wafers in the Microwave

To melt the caramel wafers in the microwave, measure the wafers and add to a glass bowl.  Then microwave on high for 30 seconds.

Stir well and reheat in 30 second intervals until melted.

I don't like this method because the caramel can burn or dry out like chocolate can.  Watch it carefully and be careful not to overheat.

How to Melt Caramel Wafers in a Melting Pot

My go to for melting chocolate wafers and caramel wafers is the Wilton Melting Pot.  It's incredibly easy to use.

Just put the wafers in the silicone liner and turn on the melting pot.  Stir it as it melts so it melts evenly.

This won't overheat your wafers, and you won't risk burning them.

How to Melt Caramel Wafers in a Double Boiler

I also recommend using a double boiler.  I like this double boiler insert because I can use my own pan.  Simply add water to your pan and place the insert on top.

Heat the water over medium heat until the wafers melt.  Stir it every few minutes to help it melt evenly.

You can also use your Instant Pot as a double boiler.  I was skeptical of this, but it works wonderfully if you have the right size bowl.

How to Package Apple Cider Gifts

If you plant to give these as apple cider gifts, there are several packaging options.

Hot Apple Cider Bombs Variations

This is a basic caramel apple cider bombs recipe.  Here are some variations to try if you want to try something different.

Tips for Making Salted Caramel Apple Cider Bombs

Here are some tips to help you make perfect bombs:

  • Wear chocolate making gloves to prevent fingerprints on the caramel shell and to prevent spreading germs.
  • Use a 2 inch sphere mold.  A larger mold may be too big for most mugs, and a smaller mold won't hold enough drink mix.
  • Use a Wilton Melt and Decorate bottle to make drizzling the white chocolate on top easier.
  • Use a chocolate brush to spread the caramel in the mold.  Once it sets up, look for thin spots or missed spots and add more melted caramel as needed.
  • Use a brush or the back of a spoon to remove any air bubbles before the caramel sets up.

Hot Apple Cider Bomb Ingredients

You will need the following to make salted caramel apple cider bombs:

Apple Cider Bombs Directions

Step #1

Set a ceramic plate in the freezer.  Then melt the salted caramel wafers in a double boiler or in a chocolate melting pot.

Step #2

Spoon melted caramel into each cavity of the sphere mold.  Use a spoon of chocolate brushes to coat the sides of the mold.  Place the mold in the freezer for 5 minutes.

Step #3

Remove the mold from the freezer and add another coat of caramel.  Freeze for an additional 5 minutes.

Step #4

Heat a small frying pan over medium heat until it's hot.  Remove the mold and place from the freezer.  Unmold each half sphere and set them on the chilled plate.  Hold the caramel semi sphere upside down and gently touch the top of it to the hot pan to melt the caramel to create a flat edge.

Step #5

Flip the caramel half sphere so the opening is at the top.  Add the apple cider drink mix.  Heat another half sphere until it's flat and place it on top of the sphere with the drink mix.  Repeat with the other two hot apple cider bombs.

Step #6

Melt the white candy melts and drizzle over the bombs.

How to Use Hot Apple Cider Bombs

Place an apple cider bombs DIY into a mug.  Add 6 ounces of hot water.  Once the caramel melts, stir well.  If giving to kids, let cool before letting them drink.

I hope you enjoy these apple cider gifts!
