How to Make Strawberry Applesauce in Instant Pot, Crock Pot, or Stove Top Recipe

06 September

Learn how to make strawberry applesauce for a delicious summer or fall treat.  This strawberry applesauce recipe is a healthy snack that's made without refined sugar.  Use honey to sweeten if needed or leave it unsweetened.

We have an orchard with several types of apple trees, so I make a lot of applesauce each year.  As much as we love applesauce, one can only eat so much plain applesauce!

While I do use my applesauce for a side dish and for cooking, sometimes we like to change up the flavor.  I like to make applesauce with strawberries for a fun new flavor.

While this can be a canning recipe, this particular recipe makes a small batch.  I make my homemade strawberry applesauce in an Instant Pot, but you can also make it in a Crock Pot slow cooker or on the stove.

How to Make Strawberry Applesauce

I use my Instant Pot for a lot more than just cooking dinner.  I use it for easy Instant Pot apple butter with red hots, Instant Pot pumpkin puree, and homemade caramel sauce recipe in the fall.  I also make a small batch Instant Pot applesauce with honey.

This year, I froze some fresh strawberries to make a strawberry applesauce recipe.  I used my pressure cooker, but I will also have Crock Pot and stove top directions.

If you make it in the slow cooker or stove, you can double or triple the batch for canning.  You can learn more about canning applesauce in my how to make applesauce with Victorio food strainer post.

Is Strawberry Applesauce Good for You?

Yes, homemade strawberry applesauce is good for you.  You can make it sugar free or add honey.  I usually don't add any sweetener unless I use a more tart apple.

Is it Cheap to Make Your Own Applesauce?

If you get the apples for free, then yes, it is cheaper.  However, I make my own applesauce with strawberries not only to save money but because I know that my apples and strawberries are organic and high quality.

I also want to ensure that my strawberry applesauce recipe is made without dyes or preservatives.

What to Add to Applesauce to Make it Taste Better?

Personally, I don't think this homemade strawberry applesauce needs anything added.  However, here are some things that you can add:

What Apples are Good for Applesauce?

I like to use a sweeter apple so I don't have to add sugar to my homemade strawberry applesauce.  However, sometimes you have to use what you can get!

Here are some good apples to try:

  • Cortland, Crispin, Golden Delicious, and Fuji apples are sweet.
  • Rome, Liberty, and Ida Red apples are tart.
  • McIntosh and Jonamac are a little tart and a little sweet.

Pink Ladies and Cortlands are my favorites for applesauce, but I'll just anything that's free.

How Can I Thicken My Applesauce?

If you like a thick applesauce, you can let it cook longer to remove some of the water.  If you are making applesauce with strawberries in your Instant Pot, then use the sauté function to cook off water.

Just be sure to stir often so your applesauce doesn't burn.

You can also strain out water with a nut bag.  I've done this, and it works.  However, it's messy.

Sweetener for Homemade Strawberry Applesauce

I prefer to use a sweeter apple so I don't need to use a sweetener.  However, if you have tart apples, then you can add some sweetener.  Try one of these sweeteners:
